A growing solar street light initiative associated with Sheikh Alhaji Mohamed Omodu Kamara, popularly known as Jagaban, is seeking to expand the use of renewable energy for community infrastructure and educational institutions across Sierra Leone.
The initiative currently identifies Bo, Kenema and Port Loko among the communities and districts being considered for solar-powered street lighting interventions. The programme also includes a focus on universities and campuses, with Eastern Technical University and Njala University identified among the institutions being considered.
According to the initiative’s development vision, the current locations should not be regarded as an exhaustive list of beneficiaries as additional communities and districts across the country are expected to be factored into the programme as the initiative expands in the coming weeks.
Universities, colleges, campuses and other relevant educational institutions will similarly be considered to extend the benefits of solar-powered infrastructure to a wider section of the population.
The broader approach is being presented as a national call to action aimed at encouraging the use of renewable energy to address practical infrastructure needs.
These Solar-powered street lights provide lighting in public spaces while reducing reliance on conventional electricity infrastructure. In communities, improved lighting can contribute to better visibility and the use of public spaces after dark.
The initiative also places universities and other educational institutions within the wider renewable-energy conversation, recognising the importance of safe and functional campus environments for students, academic staff and surrounding communities.
The programme’s current focus on Bo, Kenema, Port Loko, Eastern Technical University and Njala University is therefore described as part of a wider and potentially expanding framework.
As implementation progresses, other areas will be assessed and considered, including communities and districts that may benefit from solar-powered street lighting, as well as additional universities and campuses.
The initiative reflects a broader push toward renewable-energy solutions that can support infrastructure development while contributing to sustainable communities.
For Jagaban and supporters of the initiative, the long-term objective is to see solar-powered lighting reach more communities and institutions across Sierra Leone.
